Heroes of Newerth ist kostenlos spielbar
Das teambasierte Multiplayerspiel nach Defense of the Ancients-Prinzip ist auf ein free-to-play-Modell umgestellt worden, damit mehr Spieler angelockt werden - dies gab Hersteller S2 Games offiziell bekannt.
Somit kann Heroes of Newerth nach einer Registrierung kostenlos mit einem "Basis Account" ausprobiert werden. Allerdings steht den Basic-Spielern dann nur eine eingeschränkte Helden-Auswahl zur Verfügung. Dieser Standard-Account wird nach einer bestimmten Spielzeit bzw. nach dem Ausgeben von Goblinmünzen (Shopsystem) in einen "Verified Account" umgewandelt. Dies ist hauptsächlich dafür gedacht, dass die anderen Spieler einschätzen können, ob es sich bei dem betreffenden Spieler um einen Neuling oder eine Person mit Erfahrung handelt oder nicht.
Solltet ihr Heroes of Newerth (wie rund 540.000 andere Personen) gekauft haben, wird euer Account automatisch in einen "Legacy Account" aufgewertet, der Zugriff auf alle Helden und Spielmodi offeriert. Außerdem könnt ihr beispielsweise einstellen, dass ihr nur mit anderen "Verified Accounts" spielen wollt. Der "Legacy Account" ist fortan nicht mehr erhältlich.
Für weiteren Trubel sorgt außerdem das neue "Early Access"-System , mit dem neue Helden vorab und kostenpflichtig ausprobiert werden können, bevor sie allen anderen Spielern (inkl. "Legacy Accounts") zugänglich gemacht werden. Diese "Early Access"-Helden dürfen zwar nicht am "Tournament Play" teilnehmen, allerdings kann man sich bereits mit ihren Vor- und Nachteilen vertraut machen. Independent of Free-to-Play is a new feature called Early Access. Players will be able to purchase Early Access to new heroes to play them before they are released for free to the rest of the Legacy players.

As an existing player, your account has been automatically upgraded to a Legacy account, giving you free access to the general hero pool. New heroes may be released as part of the Early Access Program which allows you to purchase the ability to play these heroes prior to being available for FREE in the general hero pool.
With a Legacy account, you will also have the option to play in Verified Only games, to ensure that dedicated and vested players can be seperated from Basic (free-to-play non-verified accounts) accounts. If you'd like to play with friends who are joining HoN for the first time, you can also participate in Basic games to show them the ropes. With a free-to-play model, we remove a significant barrier to entry to allow you to bring new players to the game.
