Valve Software: Valve - PC-basierte Steam-Konsole wohl 2013
In den letzten Monaten gab es immer wieder Gerüchte um die "Steam Box" - eine Wohnzimmer-Konsole rund um Steam von Valve Software (wir berichteten, mehrfach). Doch diese Gerüchte wurden bisher immer dementiert. Bis jetzt: Denn Gabe Newell (Chef bei Valve Software) erklärte in einem Interview mit Kotaku im Rahmen der Video Game Awards 2012, dass sie wohl im nächsten Jahr einen PC als Konsole für das Wohnzimmer herausbringen wollen - auch die direkte Konkurrenz mit Sony und Microsoft wird gesucht, während Valve Software davon ausgeht, dass im nächsten Jahr diverse PC-basierte Systeme für das Wohnzimmer erscheinen werden.
Die Veröffentlichung von "Steam Big Picture", das bei den Spielern besser ankam als gedacht, soll der erste Schritt in diese Richtung gewesen sein. Nun soll die Linux-Version von Steam fertig gestellt werden und dann dürfte "Big Picture" auf Linux folgen. Linux soll den Entwicklern größere Freiheiten bieten, denn sie wollen offenbar Hardware und Software selbst entwickeln. Ein zentraler Satz von Gabe Newell ist in diesem Zusammenhang: "Well certainly our hardware will be a very controlled environment". Das Gerät von Valve Software soll demnach eine weitgehend abgeschlossene Umgebung bieten. Wer selbst die Kontrolle haben möchte, könne laut Newell weiterhin auf einen Desktop-PC setzen.
"He also expects companies to start selling PC packages for living rooms next year - setups that could consist of computers designed to be hooked up to your TV and run Steam right out of the gate. And yes, Newell said, they'd compete with next-gen consoles from companies like Microsoft and Sony. (...) I also asked Newell what sort of software they're working on these days. He wouldn't give specifics, but he did reiterate that they're working on their next-generation engine - which he said will work with next-generation consoles as well." (Kotaku )
